Meet Argentinian Composer: Mauricio Candussi

We caught up with Argentinian composer, Mauricio Candussi, to hear about his upcoming Brazil tour, latest projects and writing processes.

Mauricio Candussi is an Argentinian composer whose super-power is blending traditional Latin American sounds with modern musical styles. When he’s not working as a professional touring musician, he’s working on a plethora of theatre, film and television projects.

The Interview

Melodie: Hey, Mauricio! Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. What have you been working on lately?

I am working on several things. The main one is a new album by my group “Duo Finlandia”. We hope to have it ready in the first months of 2023.

That’s cool. So, how did you first get started in music?

I started learning music as a child, taking classes when I was just 4 years old! Since then pretty much all my time is spent working on music, sounds, creation and art.

You’re going on tour to Brazil right? Can you tell us more about that?

Yes! We’re touring in Brazil, it’s our inaugural return to foreign stages since the pandemic. As a duo, we’ve travelled to more than 20 countries, so staying still during the pandemic was very difficult. Let’s just say we’re very excited to play once again after such a long break!

Can you take us through your writing process?

The creative process often has different influences and different beginnings. You can start with a harmonic idea, a rhythmic pattern, or a melody. From there, it naturally grows to become a more developed idea, and eventually a song. It may also be that there’s a feeling or general idea that I’d like to convey, and I start looking for ways to make it ‘sound’ like that idea.

Which DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) do you use?

I use many different programs. From the classic Ableton and Pro Tools to the newer Reaper and Bitwig. I’m always trying things. I like being able to use several different software applications to achieve different results.

What are your other endeavours outside of production music?

I really like art in general, philosophy (I have a university degree), creativity, interesting things. Oh, and food!

Favourite band/artist and why?

It is impossible to answer that question! I like a lot of artists, and equally a lot of genres. I’m a huge fan of playlists. I like to listen to a bit of everything, discover things I didn’t know before, new artists. I’m constantly changing my soundtrack, every day.

What was the first album you bought?

I think my first CD (if you remember CDs!) was a Jean Michel Jarre record. I really liked those synthetic sounds, and the unique atmosphere he created with the combination of timbres.

Which is your favourite Mauricio Candussi track in the Melodie library and why?

My favourite Melodie track is Night Cars. I think that song turned out really well, I like how it sounds.
